  2. The moon came down low over the roofs that night. Low enough, Maeve thought, to borrow.

  3. It came in through the window with a sound like a held breath, and the room turned white.

  4. By midnight the sea had come up the lane to look for it. It was already at the gate.

  5. Maeve tried to put it back. The window had got smaller.

  6. So Maeve took it up the hill in the wheelbarrow. The water came up the hill too.

  7. At the top Maeve pushed it at the sky. The sky would not take it back. The hill was an island now.
