It was a monster. It was crying. Monsters, it turns out, are afraid of the dark.

Theo pushed the nightlight under. “Better?”

Not better. The monster went flat as a shadow and hid behind the socks.

So Theo told it a story instead. A story about the bravest monster in the world.

The story had a child in it. The monster screamed and pulled the floorboards over its head.

There was one thing left to try. Theo took a breath and crawled under the bed.

It was very dark down there. Theo was scared too. Neither of them said so. Both of them knew.
